What is a TDEE calculator and how does it help?
This health and fitness calculator will estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)—the amount of calories you use in a day, but also your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)—the amount of calories you use when at rest. It is commonly used by those seeking to manage their weight, to maximize the results of physical activity, or to better look after their diet.
You “enter” data into a TDEE calculator—your weight, height, age, gender, and physical activity level (ranging from “sedentary” to “very active”)—and then the calculator “tells” you what your TDEE is. The calculator then uses standardised formulas such as the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), and applies an activity factor to create your TDEE.
A TDEE calculator provides you with a solid estimate, but it doesn’t factor in all the variables, such as differences in muscle mass or metabolism. Nonetheless, it is a great tool to inform your caloric balance if you are looking to lose weight, maintain or gain muscle.
TDEE calculators are abundant and easy to find online, with plenty offering extra goodies such as macronutrient breakdowns, cut or bulk calorie suggestions and the ability to follow your progress towards your goal. Whether you’re simply beginning or need to organize your current routine, this calculator is a great tool to help you reach your fitness goal in no time.
