A pregnancy calculator is an easy tool that is used by women to predict their due date and keep track of the progress of their pregnancy. By calculating the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), the estimation of the date of conception and the expected date of delivery can be obtained. This tool is popular among pregnant women, health care professionals and midwives for pregnancy planning and monitoring.
Most pregnancy calculators including mine are based on the average 40-week gestation which is counted from the LMP as opposed to the date of conception. For instance, if a woman’s most recent period started on January 1, her estimated due date would be around October 8. A large number of calculators also are able to tell you the current week of pregnancy, the trimester, and the major events happening within your developing baby.
Pregnancy calculators can only provide an approximation, and may not be accurate. If a woman has an irregular menstrual cycle, late ovulation, or if the embryo is developing at different rates, then these can also affect accuracy. Therefore, doctors can use ultrasounds to help confirm or alter the due date.
Nowadays, these calculators are available online for free and are accompanied by a myriad of other perks, such as weekly pregnancy tips, fetal growth tracking, and appointment reminders. They make for easy reference for those women who want to stay in the know during their pregnancy.
